Ataxia Canada Research Funding (2025-2026)

We are excited to announce an annual research theme for 2025-2026!

The Ataxia Canada Foundation invites researchers to submit research projects around the following themes: Adaptation / Rehabilitation / Clinical research

Research funded by Ataxia Canada

Ataxia Canada funds relevant research where ataxia is the primary symptom and is genetic (recessive, dominant) and progressive in nature. This includes conditions such as Friedreich ‘s ataxia (FA), Beauce’s ataxia (SCAR8, ARCA1), spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA), ataxias with oculomotor apraxia (AOA1-4), episodic ataxias and other cerebellar ataxias.

Eligibility

Academic researchers, research associates, academic institutions, private research companies, health network research centers, or collaborative groups formed from these are eligible. Preference is given to projects led in Canada, but requests from researchers outside Canada may be considered if the research benefits people with ataxia.

Funding

  • Grants are normally 1–2 years, CAD $5,000–$20,000 annually (exceptions possible).
  • Co-funding and pan-Canadian collaborations are encouraged.
  • Long-term projects (>2 years) are generally not supported; continuation for special projects may be possible.
  • The number of projects funded depends on application quality and the Foundation’s budget.

Requirements

  • Projects must clearly explain expected therapeutic benefits. Trials or new treatment approaches are particularly encouraged.
  • Annual report and a member-facing summary are required.

Exclusions

Projects focusing on conditions such as MS, ataxic cerebral palsy, or stroke-related ataxia are not eligible.

Application Process

Applicants are invited to submit a filled application (application form is downloadable below). All duly completed research proposals will be analyzed.
