The Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) is accepting applications for the 2026 Early Career Scholar Grants. These grants support early-career researchers in the DM field, aiming to retain talent in basic, translational, and clinical research.

Areas of interest:

  • Pathogenesis of myotonic dystrophy (DM1, DM2, congenital)
  • Molecular basis underlying phenotype differences (DM1, DM2, congenital)
  • Development of diagnostics and biomarkers
  • Disease progression and natural history
  • Identification and validation of drug treatment endpoints
  • Standards of care and care integration (e.g., nursing, social work, psychology)
  • Epidemiology, economics, and support services
  • Therapeutic development, particularly early-stage projects

Note: Research on DM2 is prioritized.

Timeline:

  • Proposals Due: September 5, 2025
  • Selection Notification: by December 19, 2025
  • Period of Award: January 1, 2026 – December 31, 2027

Anticipated Awards:

  • Basic/Translational or Clinical Research:
    $95,000 per year for 2 years ($190,000 total)
  • Number of Awards: To be determined based on applicant mix and available funds
