The University of Calgary Neuromuscular Medicine / EMG Fellowship Program is now Open!

Start date: July 2027

Fellowship program details:

The fellowship is supervised by an experienced team with expertise in neuromuscular neurology, neuromuscular genetics, neurorehabilitation, and EMG. Training takes place across four hospital sites and one community clinic in Calgary, with broad clinical exposure including general neuromuscular care, ALS Clinic, Neuromuscular Genetics Clinic, Myositis Clinic, Neuromuscular  Rehabilitation Clinic, Peripheral Nerve Injury Clinic, neuromuscular inpatient consultation, muscle biopsy, and both general and complex EMG. Fellows receive comprehensive technical training in electromyography, including neuromuscular ultrasound, single fibre EMG, and develop longitudinal experience by following their own patients throughout training. The program accepts fellows from neurology and PM&R backgrounds, trains 2–3 fellows per year, and tailors clinical experiences to individual learning needs.
The program offers a strong academic environment with weekly case rounds, multidisciplinary biopsy rounds, EMG rounds, journal clubs, provincial neuromuscular rounds, and protected academic half-days for National NMD4C Curriculum enhanced by local teaching. Fellows receive regular hands-on EMG teaching that prepares them well for the CSCN EMG examination. Research is encouraged for all fellows, with enhanced opportunities in 1- or 2-year fellowships, including clinical research, innovation, and commercialization. Fellows may also participate as sub-investigators in clinical trials across a range of neuromuscular diseases. All candidates are supported in and encouraged to apply for competitive funding awards such as the NMD4C Annual Neuromuscular Postdoctoral Research and Clinical Fellowships Funding Competition, however discretionary internal funding exists for strong candidates.
