Upcoming Neuromuscular Conferences in 2022
This year we are excited to anticipate the return of in-person conferences, which provide an invaluable training and networking experience to all members of the neuromuscular community and which have been dearly missed over the past two years. In 2022, Canada will host several major neuromuscular conferences, both domestic and international. Please take a moment to read about the 7th International TREAT-NMD Conference, the 27th International Hybrid Annual Congress of the World Muscle Society, and the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Congress, which will be taking place across Canada over the rest of the year!

7th International TREAT-NMD Conference
Update: The TREAT-NMD Conference will take place from the 7-9th of December, 2022 in Vancouver, BC.
The TREAT-NMD Conference is a bi-annual networking event whose delegates include academics, patients and carers, patient advocacy organisations, clinical specialists and industry. Delegates have the opportunity to network with partners on key issues and challenges in neuromuscular disease, engage with panels of international experts who will inform, stimulate, and challenge debate, and acquire the latest updates on standards of care, outcome measures, patient reviews, and new developments. As with all of TREAT-NMD’s previous conferences this is a fantastic opportunity for all stakeholders, including patients, academics, clinicians, registry curators and industry representatives, to get together to network, learn and exchange ideas about translational research.

27th International Hybrid Annual Congress of the World Muscle Society
11th to 15th October 2022. Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The 5-day meeting will be an opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in neuromuscular diseases from around the world, with the main thematic topics that will be addressed in the plenary sessions being New Developments in Congenital Muscle Disease, Neuropathies and Non-5q Motor Neuron Disease, and The Development of Therapeutic Approaches. The World Muscle Society (WMS) will be making the presentations and e-posters available via their platform and app for delegates who wish to attend virtually. Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation Congress
26th to 29th June, 2022. Montreal, Quebec.
The Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation (CNSF) hosts an annual Canadian Congress with four days of accredited scientific courses to assist our members, and others, with their Continuing Professional Development and Maintenance of Certification. New Publication from the NMD4C Clinical Trial Network Strengthens Trial Capacity in Canada
We are pleased to share a new publication from the NMD4C Clinical Trial Network led by Kerri Lynn Schellenberg, Homira Osman, Maria Masnata, Rhiannon Hicks, Corinne Kagan, Ana Stosic, Stacey Lintern, Erin Beattie, Drs. Hanns Lochmüller, Craig Campbell, and Jean K Mah. This work focuses on the implementation of a coordinated Canadian neuromuscular clinical trial network to enhance trial readiness, capacity, and access in rare disease research.
Canadian-Led Phase II Studies Advance Vamorolone Evidence in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
NMD4C investigators contributed to two phase II studies evaluating vamorolone in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy across early childhood and adolescence, demonstrating safety, favorable pharmacokinetics, and potential efficacy. Led by Dr. Jean Mah and conducted across Canadian clinical trial sites with national and industry collaborators, the findings supported Health Canada approval of vamorolone as the first treatment for DMD in Canada. Leaders from both the clinical and patient advocacy communities, including Defeat Duchenne Canada, highlighted the impact of collaboration among patients, families, clinicians, and researchers in advancing care and improving access to new therapies.
Advancing AFC in Neuromuscular Medicine: Program Launch & September Workshop
The Royal College has approved National Training Standards for the AFC in Neuromuscular Medicine, creating a formal pathway to recognize enhanced competence with the DRCPSC credential. This designation establishes a national training standard, supports portable certification, and strengthens clinical capacity across Canada. PGME offices can now apply to offer accredited AFC programs, with a goal of five programs submitting applications by the end of 2026.
