Exercise in Neuromuscular Disorders

Speaker

Dr. Nicole B.M. Voet | Radboud University Medical Center, the Netherlands.

Nicoline (Nicole) Voet, MD PhD is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician (physiatrist) and senior researcher specializing in neuromuscular disorders. In her PhD thesis, “Aerobic exercise and cognitive behavioural therapy in Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD): a model-based approach,” she demonstrated that exercise can slow disease progression in people with FSHD.

She currently works at the Department of Neuromuscular Diseases at Klimmendaal Rehabilitation Center in Arnhem and the Radboud University Medical Center’s Muscle Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

As a translational researcher, Nicole is committed to generating results that are both scientifically sound and directly relevant to clinical practice. Her research aims to improve social participation in people with neuromuscular disorders, with a particular focus on exercise, fatigue, pain, and mental well-being.

Her current projects address the assessment and treatment of muscle fatigue and pain, and the development of patient-centered interventions. She recently initiated INSPIRE—the International group for Psychosocial INterventions to improve Quality of life in slowly progressive neuromuscular disorders—bringing together patients, researchers and clinicians from across the globe. She also chairs the Dutch national neuromuscular care network.

Nicole is widely recognized as an international expert in exercise, fatigue, pain, and psychological well-being in neuromuscular diseases. In all her research, she works closely with patients as equal partners.
