Training and Curriculum
The NMD4C Clinical Research Curriculum Development Working Group, led by Task Lead Dr. Alberto Aleman, with Curriculum Co-Chairs Dr. Marianne Nury and Dr. Gordon Jewett, have developed a standardized national curriculum for the training of clinical fellows in neuromuscular medicine in Canada.
We offer LEARNMD, an on-demand e-learning platform that delivers CPD-accredited webinars, a weekly lecture series, and curated educational resources to support learners at all career stages. High-quality neuromuscular training is already available through Canadian fellowship programs, and NMD4C continues to support efforts that strengthen education and training for the next generation of neuromuscular clinicians.
If you have educational content to contribute, we welcome your input.

One of the central components of this curriculum is the National Neuromuscular Lecture Series, recognized as a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) under the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This lecture series follows the curriculum outlined in the newly approved Area of Focused Competence (AFC) in Neuromuscular Medicine.
Canadian Neuromuscular Fellowship Programs
Through landscaping work conducted in 2020, the working group identified the 15 neuromuscular fellowships directors that currently exist in Canada. Feedback from the existing neuromuscular fellowship directors continues to be a priority for all activities of the working group, as their expertise in Canadian neuromuscular training is invaluable.
The working group has established a list of Canadian neuromuscular fellowships that presents prospective clinical fellows all of the options they have open to them for training in neuromuscular medicine in Canada.
Area of Focused Competency in Neuromuscular Medicine
Through consultation with program directors and other neuromuscular experts, the working group submitted an application to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) in neuromuscular medicine.
We’re pleased to share that this application has now been approved!
This designation will establish a national standard for training and specialist competence, provide Fellows with additional opportunities to acquire nationally and internationally portable credentials, and help prevent unnecessary fragmentation of specialty training, care, and practice by offering credentials in highly focused areas.
While implementation is expected to take 1–2 years, this approval represents a significant milestone in the development of a Canadian neuromuscular curriculum. In the meantime, the working group will continue to strengthen the resources available for neuromuscular trainees and Fellows.
Neuromuscular Training
The curriculum team is actively developing resources to guide and support neuromuscular fellows, clinicians, and medical students. One upcoming initiative is the Neuromuscular Roadmap — a curated continuing education tool that will include expert presentations, technical resources, and practical training modules. This resource will help neuromuscular clinicians enhance their skills and knowledge throughout their careers.
National Neuromuscular Lecture Series
The National Neuromuscular Lecture Series (NNLS) launched in August 2022. The NNLS is a year-long curriculum for neuromuscular fellows, developed by the curriculum working group together with the directors of fellowship programs across Canada. The NNLS contains 41 topics which constitute a comprehensive base of neuromuscular knowledge, with a weekly lecture presented by subject-matter experts on each topic. The program is CPD-accredited and is currently in its third year.
